In 1967, Markopoulos and his lover Robert Beavers left America for Greece whereupon the filmmaker refused to have his films shown in the U.S. anymore.

Died of lymphoma. After his death, Beavers made Markopoulos’ films public again.

Was the first filmmaking instructor at the School of the Art Institute in Chicago.
