Notes:
Born Andrew Warhola and attended the Carnegie Institute of Technology, majoring in pictorial design. Originally moved to NYC to become a commercial illustrator before moving into fine art.

Was good friends with film diarist Jonas Mekas, who described Warhol as the only friend who “never let me down.”

Was shot at point blank range at his studio by Valerie Solanas, a radical writer and founder of SCUM (Society for Cutting Up Men). She believed Warhol had stolen her play “Up Your Ass” and was planning to turn it into a major Broadway hit without her. The events leading up to the shooting are dramatized in I Shot Andy Warhol, directed by Mary Harron.

Underground Film Feedback (6 Notes)

  1. There is a big parisian retrospective of Andy Warhol’s films now at the Cinémathèque Française. It is a very good opportunity for me (and for all the UFG readers living in Paris)to watch again his classic films, like “Couch” or “Chelsea Girls”.
